About the Role:
The Director Arts – India is the most senior representative of Arts in the country and is
responsible for leading the British Council’s Arts strategy in India. You will drive the
development and delivery of arts programmes and cultural initiatives that build
connections between the UK and India. Your role involves shaping the UK government’s
arts and culture strategy for India, managing a specialist arts team, and building lasting
relationships with key stakeholders in both the Indian and UK arts and creative sectors.
This position is externally focused and requires strategic leadership, strong networking
skills, and a deep understanding of the creative industries.
Key Responsibilities:
- Strategy & Planning: – Lead the development of the British Council’s Arts strategy in India and contribute to
regional and global arts strategies. – Shape the UK government’s arts and culture strategy for India by collaborating with
governmental and cultural bodies. - Sector Expertise: – Use your expert knowledge of the Indian and UK arts and creative industries to inform
global arts programmes. – Provide insights and recommendations based on sector intelligence and stakeholder
feedback. - Relationship & Stakeholder Management: – Build and maintain strong relationships with senior-level stakeholders in the arts,
including government bodies, funders, and creative industry leaders. – Act as the main external representative for the British Council’s arts work in India. - Business Development: – Lead business and partnership development strategies to support and expand arts
programmes in India. – Identify new opportunities and form strategic alliances that benefit both the UK and
Indian creative sectors. - Leadership & Management: – Manage and mentor a dispersed specialist arts team across India. – Represent the British Council at industry events, conferences, and trade shows to enhance brand visibility and influence.
- Programme Management: – Ensure the effective delivery of British Council Arts programmes in India, working closely
with the Deputy Director, Arts. – Monitor, evaluate, and report on the performance of arts initiatives to senior management.
Qualifications:
- Candidates must have the pre-existing, legal right to work in India.
- Significant experience in the arts and creative industries, with a strong network of senior
arts contacts in both India and the UK. - A proven track record in leadership roles within the arts sector and experience in building
and managing successful cultural programmes. - Excellent communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to influence policy and drive business development in a
dynamic environment.
